Third Mission

The Computer Science Department at Sapienza is committed to promoting and supporting the application, valorisation, popularization and transfer of  knowledge and technologies, putting its skills at the service of the community. Alongside its traditional teaching and research functions, the Department carries out concrete initiatives as part of the Third Mission, actively engaging with institutions, the productive sector, and civil society.

The activities are divided into several areas:

Lifelong Learning and Open Education
The Department promotes continuous professional development and the dissemination of scientific knowledge through dedicated events and programs, including:

  • IT Meeting and IT Lunch Seminar, opportunities for dialogue open to the scientific and professional community.
  • Alfabeti Ecologici and Decifrare la Contemporaneità, initiatives encouraging reflection on the relationship between science, technology, and society.
  • Orientation programs for high school students such as PCTO: Fun with Algorithms and PCTO: G4Greta.
  • Collaboration with the ITS Foundation “ICT Academy”, which strengthens the link between higher education and the job market.

Academic Entrepreneurship
The Department supports the creation of spin-offs and innovative start-ups, contributing to the growth of the local and national entrepreneurial fabric. Initiated experiences include:

  • ItalAI
  • 4IA
  • BB-SMILE Srl

Industrial and Intellectual Property
Numerous patents have been filed by members of the department, testifying to the innovative impact of research activities.

Public Engagement
The Department is strongly active in dialogue with the general public, through:

  • Radio and television interventions, with contributions on Rai1, Rai Cultura, RaiNews, and investigations on digital and social issues(including those by Walter Quattrociocchi, Paola Velardi).
  • Organisation of public events, such as Inspiring Italy 2021 and the Informatici Senza Frontiere Festival. 

Production and management of artistic and cultural heritage
The Department is involved in projects that combine technology ad creativity, such as:

  • SANLO Defence
  • Musikeyrtual

Provision of Social and Educational Public Goods and Inclusion Policies
The Department promotes equity and broad access to ICT disciplines through:

  • The"Tavola Rotonda recitata" on gender stereotypes (Paola Velardi).
  • The gict.it site, reference point for initiatives to reduce the gender gap in the technology sector.
