Title: From online harms to moderation practices: a social computing perspective

Abstract: Moderation is a primary service for the governance of online platforms. Through moderation, platforms remove illegal and indecent content, to create a place for expression and give people a voice. However, despite good intentions and substantial investments, current moderation practices have shown clear limitations. Unable to stop the process of mainstreaming the fringe, they allow abuse and polarization to become chronic, racism and misogyny to run rampant, and misinformation and conspiracy theories to amplify their reach. This talk will discuss social computing approaches for understanding, measuring, and improving online moderation as a socio-technical system.
