The IEEE Symposium on Visual Languages/Human Centric Computing, an internationally recognized conference in the field, each year gives the "Most Influential Paper Award" to work presented at the workshop exactly 20 years before.  The 2014 award went to Prof. Paolo Bottoni for the article, "Formalising Visual Languages", joint with Stefano Levialdi, Piero Mussio, and Maria Francesca Costabile and presented at the conference in 1995.  Prof. Stefano Levialdi, now retired, was full professor in the department when the work was originally presented.
